Nov 18, Brasilia: What are the rights and challenges of mothers of premature babies? That was the theme of the online seminar “November Purple: Together for the premature, taking care of the future”, promoted this Tuesday (17th) by the Ministry of Women, Family and Human Rights. November 17th, World Prematurity Day is remembered.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), last year, prematurity, that is, when the baby is born before 37 weeks of gestation, was the main cause of infant mortality worldwide.
Another data, this time from the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) and the Ministry of Health, shows that, in Brazil, 11.7% of all births occur ahead of time. In 2019, about 300 thousand premature births were registered. As a result, according to the Ministry of Women, Family and Human Rights, Brazil ranks 10th among the nations where most cases of prematurity are registered.
“This has a huge impact. Of course, our position in the ranking has a lot to do with our number of births, with our population. But, anyway, we are above the world average of premature births, which is 10%. So, around 340 thousand premature babies are born here every year in our country ”, highlights Denise Suguitani, representative of the Prematurity.Com Non-Governmental Organization.
Among the challenges to avoid premature birth are information, education, inclusion and shared care. Amongst the achievements, November Roxo, the kangaroo method, advances in treatment and the expansion of maternity leave for mothers of premature babies.
