Ian Duddy arrives to lead the British Embassy team in Chile
Mr Ian Duddy has been appointed Ambassador to the Republic of Chile in succession to Mr Jamie Bowden.
UK NEWS: Mr Duddy’s priorities will be focused on UK-Chile co-operation in response to the Coronavirus crisis, including efforts for a clean, resilient global economic recovery and promoting meaningful action to tackle climate change in the lead-up to the COP26 UN climate conference hosted in Glasgow in November 2021 by the UK in partnership with Italy.
The Ambassador’s objective will include leading on the implementation of the UK-Chile Continuity Agreement, as the UK has left the UE and is now in a transitional period until 31st December 2020.
His work will also include the promotion of trade and investment, defence and security cooperation and science and innovation.
Ian joined the Diplomatic Service in 2000 and most recently worked as British Ambassador to Uruguay from 2016-2020.
Ian has also worked overseas in Geneva, covering human rights, and in Buenos Aires, as a political officer. In other roles in London, Ian has worked on EU affairs, counter-narcotics and economic policies.
Regarding his appointment, Mr Duddy said:
I am delighted to start my new role in Chile, one of the UK’s oldest friends. I feel hugely privileged to inherit the legacy of a very old, strong and warm relationship. Chile and the UK share so many values. We both believe in free trade and international cooperation, supported by a rules-based system.
This is an especially exciting moment for the UK-Chile partnership, with unique opportunities to strengthen ties and collaboration, especially in the response to the Coronavirus crisis and our joint ambition to tackle climate change and promote a science-led, clean and green recovery across the whole planet.
