Brazil Govt extends zero tariffs for importing medicines and supplies against Covid-19

The measure was extended until June 30, 2021, in order to increase supply and reduce costs of goods destined to treat the disease.

Dec 30, Sao Paulo: The Chamber of Foreign Trade (Camex) extended the term of Resolution 17/2020, which reduced the Import Tax rate to zero for products considered essential to confront Covid-19. The extension was approved in a virtual meeting of the Executive Management Committee of Camex (Gecex), on December 18, and published this Tuesday (12/29) in the Official Gazette of the Union, in Resolution Gecex 133/2020.

The reduction in the rates would end on December 31, 2020, but was extended until June 30, 2021, for 298 products, covering medicines and their inputs, tests for virus detection and vaccines.

The objective of the measure, by maintaining the reduction of tariffs to zero, is to increase the supply of medicines, as well as inputs for the national production of goods destined to fight the new coronavirus, reducing the costs for the manufacture of these goods in the country and increasing the availability to the Brazilian health system.

Resolution 17/2020 also determines that the agencies and entities of the Federal Public Administration that perform activities of licensing, control or inspection of imports of these items adopt priority treatment for the release of goods.
