Brazilian education grew 48% graduate in the last decade

The Brazilian stricto sensu graduate program went from 3,128 programs in 2011 to 4,650 in 2020.

Feb 12, Sao Paulo: The Brazilian stricto sensu graduate program grew 48.6% in the last decade, from 3,128 programs in 2011 to 4,650 in 2020. The information, which includes master's and doctorate courses, was disclosed by Benedito Aguiar, president of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes).

In this context, Capes has played an important role in supporting graduate education through the National Graduate System (SNPG).

Capes' president trusts the transformative potential of Brazilian science and technology, driven by postgraduate studies, for diagnosing and fighting Covid-19. He cited the Capes Epidemic Combat Program, "a sample of the SNPG's scientific potential and the ability to respond quickly to an emerging and important demand for our society".

The program has an investment of R $ 200 million, over four years, and the granting of up to 2,600 scholarships for master's, doctorate and post-doctorate. The initiative was implemented in two dimensions: an emergency action - which offered 1,189 scholarships right at the beginning of the crisis - and the strategic action focused on inducing specific research themes, with the selection of 109 projects involving 55 teaching and research institutions and 1,300 researchers.
