- Let's not normalise what is happening in Canada, says Jaishankar
Hitting out at Canada, EAM S Jaishankar has said it is necessary to call out things like violence, threats and intimidation against Indian diplomats and missions and wondered, if this had happened to any other country, would the world have taken it with equanimity. "Let's not normalise what is happening in Canada," Jaishankar said during an interaction with Indian journalists here on Friday. His remarks came amidst simmering tensions with Ottawa following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's explosive allegations of the 'potential' involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on June 18 in British Columbia. India had designated Nijjar as a terrorist in 2020. India has angrily rejected the allegations as 'absurd' and 'motivated' and expelled a senior Canadian diplomat in a tit-for-tat move to Ottawa's expulsion of an Indian official over the case. "We have had an ongoing problem with Canada and the Canadian government for some years now. The ongoing problem really revolves around the permissiveness to terrorism, extremism and violence. This permissiveness is also reflected in the fact that some important extradition requests have not been responded to from their side," he said. "We have had smoke bombs thrown at the mission, we have had violence in front of consulates, there are posters put up. Do you consider this normal? If this had happened to any other country, how would they react? Let's not normalise what is happening in Canada. It is important to call out what is happening there," Jaishankar said. "What is happening in Canada, had it happened anywhere else, do you think the world would've taken it with equanimity?” he asked. When asked about Trudeau's allegations, he said India has already pointed out to Canada that this is not the government of India's policy. "But if they are prepared to share with us specifics and anything relevant, we are also open to looking at it. So in that sense, that's where the matter stands,” Jaishankar said. Jaishankar said one of the problems is that no incident is isolated and the totality as there is a context for everything. "There are multiple problems out there. So, I guess in the case of individual incidents, the concerned governments will have to talk to each other and see how they sort of take it forward,” he said. “But there is a larger issue. And I think it's important that the larger issue should be flagged. The larger issue is this permissiveness that I have spoken about," he said. He also asserted that it was not acceptable to make threats and intimidate diplomats in the name of freedom of speech. “We don't need to learn from other people what freedom of speech is about. But we can tell people this. We don't think freedom of speech extends to incitement, to violence. That to us is a misuse of freedom," he emphasised. Jaishankar said he always asks people one question, how would they react if they were in his place? "If it was your diplomats, your embassies, your people, what would be your reaction?” he asked. Jaishankar said the entire debate should not focus only on issue one and not on issue two and the bigger picture, which has been going on for some time and which is a very serious picture. “After all, I was thinking back, when was the last time that any of our missions was intimidated to a point where it could not continue with its normal function? I will have to think back. And if someone says this could happen in a G-7 country, in a commonwealth country, it gives you a lot to think about,” Jaishankar said. On September 21, India suspended visa services for Canadian citizens in view of 'security threats' faced by the Indian High Commission and consulates in Canada. - From Arnab Goswami to Sudhir Chaudhary: I.N.D.I.A bloc boycotts 14 TV anchors
Earlier in the week, the media panel had prepared a draft, which was placed before the Coordination Committee. Sources said there were objections from certain quarters to the proposal in the Working Group on Media but finally it took a decision to go ahead. A day after the I.N.D.I.A Coordination Committee’s decision, the bloc’s Working Group on Media on Thursday put out a list of 14 TV anchors on whose shows the constituents would not send their representatives. The anchors named are Arnab Goswami (Republic TV), Aditi Tyagi (Bharat Express), Amish Devgan and Aman Chopra (News18 Hindi), Anand Narasimhan (CNN-News18), Ashok Shrivastav (DD News), Sudhir Chaudhary and Chitra Tripathi (Aaj Tak), Navika Kumar (Times Now), Gaurav Sawant and Shiv Aroor (India Today TV), Prachi Parashar (India TV), Rubika Liaquat (Bharat 24) and Sushant Sinha (Times Now Navbharat). The decision was taken during a digital meeting of the Working Group on Media during the day, after the Coordination Committee asked to prepare a list. Earlier in the week, the media panel had prepared a draft, which was placed before the Coordination Committee. Sources said there were objections from certain quarters to the proposal in the Working Group on Media but finally it took a decision to go ahead. Sources also said during the Coordination Committee meeting, some leaders said a similar list should be prepared at state level too, though no such decision was taken. Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur hit out at the Opposition bloc by posting on ‘X’, “Boycott of journalists, FIR cases against them. I.N.D.I.A alliance, why so much frustration?” Some of the journalists whose name figured in the list also lashed out at the I.N.D.I.A parties on social media. Aditi Tyagi said, "My number is at the top among the list of journalists who ask questions on behalf of the country. Tyagi does not know fear. Jai Hind." Ashok Shrivastava said, "I had said yesterday that many journalists are the target of the opposition. Initially there were 34 names in this list but some people (including some big names) accepted to cave in and then the list of remaining 14 people was released." Sudhir Chaudhary posted on 'X', "I.N.D.I.A alliance has released the list of those journalists who refused to become 'Charan Chumbak'. Now they will be boycotted. Now it remains to be seen what answer the Indian media gives to this." - Apple poised to shed $194 billion as China widens iPhone curbs
Apple Inc. shares tumbled in premarket trading Thursday, on track to wipe out $194 billion of market value in just two days, as China plans to expand a ban on the use of iPhones to government-backed agencies and state companies. Apple Inc. shares tumbled in premarket trading Thursday, on track to wipe out $194 billion of market value in just two days, as China plans to expand a ban on the use of iPhones to government-backed agencies and state companies. Shares of the Cupertino, California-based company fell as much as 3.2 per cent premarket, after slumping 3.6 per cent Wednesday. It would mark the second time in roughly a month that its shares have seen such a sharp decline. China, which is the technology giant’s biggest foreign market and global production base, has been on a yearslong effort to root out foreign technology used in sensitive environments. The latest development also coincides with Beijing’s effort to reduce its reliance on American software and circuitry. If Beijing goes ahead, the unprecedented blockade might also affect several other US technology companies that rely on sales and production in China. Apple suppliers across continents were trading lower on Thursday as multiple reports confirmed China’s latest changes. However, bullish analysts like Wedbush Securities’ Daniel Ives think the effect of an “iPhone ban is way overblown” as it would affect less than 500,000 iPhones of the roughly 45 million he expects to be sold in the country over the next 12 months. “Despite the loud noise Apple has seen massive share gains in the China smartphone market,” Ives, who has an overweight rating on the stock, wrote in a note. Prices of N-95 Masks are getting reduced by the Importers/ Manufacturers/Suppliers of N-95 Masks after an Advisory issued by NPPA INDIA Continue Continue May 25, 2020 at 6:48:56 PM Never miss an update, Subscribe to our newsletter Subscribe Thanks for submitting! Photo by Engin Akyurt from Pexels Share The Government has notified N-95 Masks as an essential commodity under Essential Commodities Act, 1955 by the Government vide Notification dated 13th March 2020. Thus, hoarding, black-marketing of the essential commodity is punishable offence under the Act. To keep check on the hoarding, black-marketing of the essential commodity, NPPA in exercise of the powers conferred under National Disaster Management Act, 2005 had directed all States/ UT Governments to ensure sufficient availability of surgical and protective Masks, Hand Sanitizers and Gloves at prices not exceeding the Maximum Retail Price printed on the pack size vide Orders dated 13th March 2020. Grievances have been received regarding hoarding, black-marketing and differential higher pricing of N-95 Masks in the country. In this context, NPPA has directed State Drug Controllers/Food & Drug Administrations of all State/ UT Governments to take appropriate actions. As reported, raids have been conducted by few SDCs/ FDAs and appropriate action is being taken against the hoarders and black-marketers of the essential commodity. A PIL has also been filed before Hon’ble High Court of Bombay on the plea of bringing price cap on the N-95 Masks by the Government. The Government is striving to ensure uninterrupted supply of N-95 Masks in adequate quantity in the country. For this, the Government is procuring largest chunk of the N-95 Masks directly from the manufacturers/ importers/ suppliers at bulk rates. To address the issue of higher prices of the N-95 Masks, NPPA intervened to bring down the prices. In this regard, in order to ensure availability of N-95 Masks at affordable prices in the country, NPPA issued an Advisory on 21st May 2020 to all the manufacturers/ importers/ suppliers of the N-95 Masks to maintain parity in prices for non-government procurements and to make available the same at reasonable prices. Further, NPPA submitted before Hon’ble High Court of Bombay on the plea of bringing price cap on the N-95 Masks that looking to the mismatch in the demand-supply of N-95 Masks in the country, NPPA advised manufacturers/ importers/ suppliers to bring down the prices voluntarily. Meanwhile NPPA denies the news item appeared in the Times of India today alleging that NPPA approvingly cited a price that is more than three times the government procurement rate for the masks. The Government procurement rate quoted in the news clipping is fallacious, deceptive and misleading. After issuing such an Advisory, major manufacturers/ importers of N-95 Masks have reduced their prices significantly up to 47% leading to availability of N-95 Masks in the country at affordable prices. As reported by the other manufacturers/ importers of N-95 Masks, it is expected that other manufacturers/ importers will follow the advice of the Government and roll down the prices in the larger public interest. Union HRD Minister and Sports Minister launch ‘Fit Hai to Hit Hai India’ INDIA Continue Continue February 23, 2021 at 3:58:23 AM Never miss an update, Subscribe to our newsletter Subscribe Thanks for submitting! Image of a video conference between Kiran Rijiju, PV Sindhu, Sunil Chhetri Share Olympic medal winner badminton player Ms P.V Sindhu and Indian football captain Sunil Chhetri were also present at "Fit Hai To Hit Hai India" program organized under the Fit India campaign. Union Human Resource Development Minister Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' and Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs and Ministry of Minority Affairs Shri Kiren Rijiju interacted with students here today under the Fit India campaign by the Government of India. During this live interaction, all the dignitaries held detailed talks on being fit and enumerated the importance of fitness. The Fit India Talks sessions are being organized in association with the Sports Authority of India and the Ministry of Human Resource Development. Speaking on the occasion Shri Pokhriyal said that a lot of people have joined the Fit India campaign launched by the Government of India in a very short time. On the clarion call of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, people have undertaken the fitness mission in their everyday life. The Minister informed that Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) also announced in April that it would launch a new series of fitness sessions for school going children in the Fit India Active Day program under this campaign. 13,868 schools affiliated to CBSE have participated in various Fit India programs and 11,682 schools have also received the Fit India flag. She Pokhriyal said that during the pandemic, it is very important that we all stay fit and motivate students to stay fit and the battle against this disease can be won only by staying fit. A fit person's immunity keeps him away from all kinds of diseases. The Minister hoped that that students across the country will also incorporate fitness and healthy habits into their lives. Addressing the students in this special dialogue, Shri Rijiju said that our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has always inspired all the countrymen to stay fit. If India will remain fit only then India will move forward. In this direction, we not only started the Fit India campaign but also highlighted the importance of yoga in the world. The Minister informed that the Government has started connecting the children with fitness. Children are the future of our country and through this campaign, we are trying to make them both mentally and physically healthy. Many fitness icons have joined this campaign to motivate students and encourage them to remain healthy and fit. Shri Rijiju said, “Fit India is becoming people’s movement in the truest sense. Majority of our 1.3 billion population consist of school children. In the last 8-9 months, 2.5 lakh schools have registered under Fit India. Without the help of Shri. Nishank, this wouldn’t have happened. Together, we attended functions in launching the Fit India School Week. Our Prime Minister’s vision is to create a fit nation and the movement is growing very well. We have a committed team in our ministry and multiple sports stars are taking forward this movement. On August 29 this year, we will complete one year of Fit India’s launch. In this one year, we can show where we have reached. It has been a complete people’s movement.” Shri Kiren Rijiju added that “If you are not physically fit, everything else becomes futile. Therefore, it is very necessary to do yoga or normal exercise and play sports. Those who can’t play sports can stay fit. India has a rich tradition of sports but unfortunately, we couldn’t create a culture. Our campaigns like the long run have become big successes and going forward, there are more coming. After 8-9 years, we can see ourselves become a complete fit nation. There is lots of enthusiasm among youth to stay fit and I am happy everyone has accepted the Fit India movement as a universal campaign.” Recommended Top Mobile Apps Downloaded Continue Continue Planner 5D- Interior design app INSTALL Available: WorldWide Flipkart Online Shopping App INSTALL Available: India A search and seizure operation conducted by the Income Tax Department in Kolkata March 11, 2021 at 7:31:22 AM Rep. image Kolkata: The Income Tax Department carried out a search and seizure operation on 10.03.2021 on two separate persons based in Kolkata, who are engaged in the handling of cash of others on a commission basis.
