Oct 4, Foreign Trade: In September, the Brazilian trade balance registered a surplus of US $ 6.164 billion. Exports totalled the US $ 18.459 billion and imports, US $ 12.296 billion. This means that, in the period, Brazil exported more than it imported. When the reverse occurs, a trade deficit is recorded. The data were released on Thursday (01) by the Foreign Trade Secretariat of the Ministry of Economy.


It is the best result of the trade balance for the months of September. “The balance of trade this year has a very specific context, which is a global crisis caused by a coronavirus. And what we have observed is a volume even with a crisis, worldwide demand in retraction, there is an increasing volume of Brazilian exports ”, said Herlon Brandão, undersecretary of Foreign Trade Intelligence and Statistics.


Last month, exports totalled the US $ 18.459 billion; and imports, of the US $ 12.296 billion.


Accumulated 2020

In the year, exports totalled the US $ 156.78 billion and imports, the US $ 114.336 billion, with a positive balance of US $ 42.445 billion. "It is the second-largest trade balance for this nine-month period, behind only that of 2017," said Brandão.


Featured sectors in September 2020

In September this year, agriculture and the extractive industry recorded an increase in export values ​​compared to the same period last year, of, respectively, 3.2% and 9.2%.


In agriculture, according to the Ministry of Economy, the products with record values ​​for September were sugar, corn and pork. In the extractive industry, ore prices grew 25% compared to September last year, which set the record for exports in the sector.


Forecast for 2020

Based on September data, the Ministry of Economy expects Brazil to export, in 2020, a total of US $ 210.7 billion; and import, US $ 155.7 billion.


“The result of this is a 9% lower trade flow in the year, totalling the US $ 366.3 billion. And the trade balance should remain at the same level as projected in July, with the US $ 55 billion. A balance 14.4% higher than the US $ 48.1 billion in 2019 ”, concluded the secretary.
