The platform allows access to climate change projections for the whole of Brazil

The tool provides data in an accessible way, with maps and graphs, to support actions for adaptation or further studies.

Nov 27, Brasilia: Brazil now has an online platform on which it is possible to view climate change scenarios for the entire national territory, the Climate Projections portal. The unprecedented tool in the country was built to make climate projections accessible, derived from global and regional models, accessible.

Through the platform, it is possible to visualize the increase in temperature, the reduction or increase in rainfall, the variation in the number of consecutive hot days, among other aspects related to climate change.

Queries can be made through the selection of filters that involve scenarios projected by time horizon, for the next years or decades, or scenarios by the level of heating, that is, what should occur in a given region if the global average temperature increases 1, 5 ºC, 2 ºC or 4ºC.

“There was a demand for this climatic information”, explains Lincoln Alves, a researcher at the Earth Sciences General Coordination and one of the platform's developments coordinators. According to him, the proposal was to make these data available in a more didactic way.

The Climate Projections portal was developed by the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), a research unit of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovations (MCTI). The initiative is supported by the international cooperation project Fourth National Communication and Biennial Update Reports from Brazil to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Data extraction

The available data can be extracted by downloading raw data, which requires analysis and interpretation by specialists and can also be viewed on interactive maps. These possibilities were designed to meet the demands of two public profiles: one more technical, as researchers on the subject who seek very specific data, and one non-technical.

The information can assist studies in several socioeconomic sectors and on topics such as agriculture, energy, health, water resources, ecosystems, cities, among others.

Institutional articulator

The project of the Fourth National Communication and Biennial Reports from Brazil to UNFCCC, coordinated by MCTI, which brings together more than 100 institutions and about 400 specialists, aims to report, through an official document, the country's efforts to implement the Climate Convention, an international commitment made by the Brazilian Government.

At the national level, the project assumes the role of an institutional articulator on the climate agenda as it connects research institutes, specialists, private initiative and government agencies.

In addition to articulation with national actors, the project encourages articulation with international institutes that develop climate models, such as the UK's Met Office.
