Sep 23, Pantanal: The rescue and treatment of animals affected by forest fires in the Pantanal were reinforced. Petrobras will donate R $ 150 thousand to the Bichos do Pantanal Project to purchase food, water, equipment and medicines.

Through the Bicho Vivo Action campaign, which began in September, the project raises funds to spread water, buy food such as fruits and corn for animals in affected areas and to guarantee the structure for the work of veterinarians and partners who perform the clinical evaluation of animals rescued and emergency care.

Since 2013, Petrobras has sponsored the Bichos do Pantanal Project, carried out by the Sustainable Institute for Social and Environmental Responsibility. In view of the emergency situation, the company made an additional contribution of resources.

The executive manager of social responsibility at Petrobras, Olinta Cardoso, stressed that the integration of efforts is essential to help the recovery of the fauna and flora of the Pantanal.

“Our participation in this campaign was with the donation of R $ 150 thousand, which doubles the goal of capturing the project. The moment is of emergency, the Pantanal needs help and our performance ”, he said.

The coordinator of the environmental education program of the Bichos do Pantanal project, Mahal Massavi, explained the work that is being done, such as the supply of food to animals in more critical areas. "The Bicho Vivo campaign, associated with a network of partners, aims to ensure the well-being and recovery of the Pantanal fauna by providing medicines, logistical support to professionals and food".

Animal care

Rescued animals require different treatments. Those with milder injuries are treated by veterinary staff at the scene. In cases of severe burns, they are sent to veterinary hospitals in Cuiabá and Goiás. Instituto Sustentar points out that the animals that resisted the fire will be responsible for the recovery of life in the region.

Federal resources to combat fires

On the 15th, the Federal Government announced the transfer of R $ 3.8 million for actions to fight forest fires in Mato Grosso do Sul, especially in the Pantanal region. The resource will cost 37 actions, to be implemented over 90 days. It adds up to another R $ 562.8 thousand already transferred by the Federal Government to help fight the flames. Mato Grosso will receive R $ 10.1 million in federal aid to fight fires.

Data from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) show that between January and September 21, 2020, 16,119 fire outbreaks were recorded in the Pantanal.

The Armed Forces have been active in fighting fires in the Pantanal region since July 25, in cooperation with the competent federal and state bodies. Initially, at the request of the Government of the State of Mato Grosso do Sul and, subsequently, of Mato Grosso, whose area of the Pantanal also began to be contemplated as of August 5 last. According to the Ministry of Defense, Navy, Army and Air Force vessels and helicopters participate in the operation, in addition to Marines with a course in a forest fire.
