More than 30 thousand indigenous people benefited from Operation Maranhão

Oct 6, COVID-19: Operation Maranhão benefited around 33,000 indigenous people in the state, most of them Guajajara, who suffer from the effects of the crisis caused by Covid-19. The action carried out medical and dental care, made rapid tests for the diagnosis of the new coronavirus and delivered supplies for protection against the disease and medications.


The operation carried out jointly by the Ministries of Defense; of health, and Justice and Public Security began on September 14 and ended this Monday (5th) in indigenous towns and villages.


“A basically assistance operation, where doctors, nurses, nursing technicians and even veterinarians, made an operation to bring health to the indigenous population of that place, in the order of 33 thousand people”, said the Secretary of Personnel, Education, Health and Sports Ministry of Defense, Reserve Army General, Manoel Luiz Narvaz Pafiadache.


In the third stage of the operation, 1.5 tons of inputs were distributed to the indigenous people. The mission was accompanied by 12 doctors, 3 nurses, 6 nursing assistants and 3 veterinarians from the Armed Forces totalling 24 Armed Forces professionals.


The Operation, according to the secretary, respected all health protocols and also indigenous culture. “We were very well received in all the villages in which we had; and this was a mark of this operation ”, he said. According to him, more than 19 thousand visits were made by health professionals.


Operation Maranhão had three phases

Operation Maranhão began on September 14 and was divided into three phases. In phase 1 and phase 2, 1.5 tonnes of inputs were also distributed in each of them to help combat Covid-19.


In addition to the Navy, Army and Air Force health personnel, the Operation Maranhão team also included professionals from the Special Secretariat for Indigenous Health (SESAI).


According to the Ministry of Defense, the third phase of Operation Maranhão, which took place from September 29 to October 5, was the fourteenth indigenous mission in this year 2020 and has already assisted more than 100 thousand indigenous people.


Animal care

In the third stage of Operation Maranhão, in addition to health professionals from the Armed Forces, for the first time, the Ministry of Defense sent veterinarians to work on the prevention and control of zoonoses, such as rabies, leishmaniasis, among other communicable diseases of animals that live in the villages. 130 veterinary consultations were carried out.


“It is a great satisfaction to finish an operation involving several aerial means, several people involved in terms of assistance. You can tell that we were completely successful in the mission, in Operation Maranhão ”, concluded Secretary Pafiadache.


Operation COVID

Operation Maranhão is part of the actions to fight Operation Covid-19, developed by the Ministry of Defense to face the disease.


In the last 180 days, the Ministry of Defense has promoted 16,817 actions. The missions included, for example, air transport of personnel, medical equipment and food; border and sanitary barrier actions; decontamination of public spaces, awareness campaigns among the population, and the rescue of isolated Brazilians abroad on account of Covid-19.


These actions also included assistance to 99,200 indigenous people across the country, with the distribution of food, medicines, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), diagnostic tests, as well as lectures with guidance on the disease. Health professionals from the Armed Forces provided assistance to 37 thousand indigenous people.


On March 20, the Ministry of Defense activated the Joint Operations Center to coordinate and plan the employment of the Armed Forces in the fight against Covid-19. The actions involve, for example, decontamination of public spaces, blood donations, transportation of medicines and health equipment and distribution of food kits to low-income people.


In carrying out all activities, the military acts organized in 10 Joint Commands, which cover the entire national territory, as well as in the Aerospace Operations Command (COMAE). The initiative is part of the Federal Government's effort to confront the new coronavirus.
