Sep 8, The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovations (MCTI) opened a public notice to finance Assistive Technology projects in the amount of R $ 40 million. The initiative provides for greater investment in technologies essential for inclusion and better quality of life for people with some type of disability (PwD). Today, Brazil has about 50 million people with disabilities. The announcement is part of a partnership with the Financier of Studies and Projects (Finep) and with the ministries of Health, Women, Family and Human Rights (MMDFH), launched last Wednesday (2).

The announcement aims to encourage research, development and innovation in projects that involve technologies and contribute to innovative actions for the Unified Health System (SUS). With this, it is expected to promote independence, autonomy, social inclusion and improvement of the quality of life of the elderly and people with disabilities and reduced mobility.

MCTI also signed a cooperation agreement with the General Villas Bôas Institute (IGVB). The partnership provides support for technological innovation as a way to develop assistive technology (TA), seek investments and make new items reach those who need them to live with more comfort, dignity and remain productive. General Villas Bôas, with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), was unable to attend the ceremony because he belonged to the coronavirus risk group, but he used technology to write with his eyes his speech that was read by the president of the IGVB Superior Council, and the general's wife, Maria Aparecida Villas Bôas.

"We Brazilians, as a society and as a public, have enjoyed the happiness of seeing in the MCTI the virtues of a scientist being made compatible with the inner wealth of a humanist. In this sense, the IGVB celebrates the circumstance of associating with the MCTI, creating spaces for coexistence together with our astronaut and those who follow him in the cultivation of human aggrandizement. I am grateful for the possibility of associating ourselves for the benefit of those who make us a field of hope ".

Minister Marcos Pontes stressed that the themes Rare Diseases and Assistive Technology are among the priority projects of MCTI. “I hope that one-day science will help the blind to see, a physically disabled person to walk. I strongly believe in science and in the capacity of our researchers. But for this to happen, we need everyone to unite and that is what we are doing today ”, he declared.

Projects

Products, equipment, devices, resources, methodologies, strategies, practices and services that promote functionality related to the activity and participation of people with some type of disability in their daily lives will be supported.

Proposals will be supported in five thematic lines: aid for the autonomous daily and work performance of the disabled and the elderly; aid for expanding visual, auditory skills and promoting intellectual development for people with disabilities; orthoses, prostheses and auxiliary means of locomotion; habilitation and rehabilitation.

The electronic form for the submission of proposals (FAP) is available on the Finep website. The deadline for submission of proposals is 17:00 on September 18th. The final result is expected to be released on December 10.
