Inauguration of the Pajeú System will serve more than 100K residents of Pernambuco's backlands

Oct 2, SAN FRANCISCO: Northeasterners who live with drought will benefit from the waters of the São Francisco River Integration Project. This Thursday (1st), the first phase of the second stage of the Pajeú Pipeline System, in São José do Egito (PE), with the presence of President Jair Bolsonaro.


The structure will supply more than 100 thousand people in the region of Pernambuco's backlands with water from the East Axis of the São Francisco River Integration Project. In this stage of the undertaking, R $ 245 million were invested by the Federal Government, through the National Department for Works against Droughts (Dnocs). Between 2019 and 2020, transfers totalled R $ 12.7 million. There are 193.4 kilometres with seven pumping stations and seven supported reservoirs.


The water from the Adje do Pajeú is captured in the Eixo Leste, in Sertânia (PE), and distributed to the districts and headquarters of the municipalities of Carnaubeira da Penha, São José do Egito, Tuparetama, Itapetim, in Pernambuco, and Princesa Isabel, in Paraíba .


At the inauguration ceremony, the Minister of Regional Development, Rogério Marinho, celebrated the conclusion of the first phase of the second stage of the Pajeú Adductor System.


“We are here concluding a work that started in previous governments providing water security to São José do Egito, which, since 2015, receives its waters through a kind of pull made in Serra Talhada. From today, water security is established and there will be no shortage of water for residents of São José do Egito and neighbouring municipalities, ”he said.


“Let's start, soon, the company is already the second phase of this work with more than R $ 200 million that will allow ten cities, five in Pernambuco and five in Paraíba, to also receive water from their taps ”, said Rogério Marinho.


According to the minister, investments in waterworks in the Pernambuco backlands bring tranquillity and the possibility of development for residents of the benefited regions. "People will no longer need a water tank, a cacimba, nor will they use water that is not suitable for human consumption", he observed.


Agreste Branch

In Pernambuco, President Jair Bolsonaro and Minister Rogério Marinho were also in Sertânia where they visited works on the Ramal do Agreste that already has 70.6% of the execution completed. There, they heard explanations about the operation of the pumping station.


The structure will also receive waters from the East Axis of the São Francisco River Integration Project. After the completion of the branch, 68 cities and more than 2.2 million inhabitants will be served.


The Agreste branch is located in the north of Pernambuco and is 70.8 kilometres long, with a flow capacity of 8 thousand litres per second. The work has received more than R $ 904.7 million from the Federal Government since the beginning of 2019. In total, it is budgeted at R $ 1.67 billion and has about 2,600 workers and 580 equipment.
