Government works in several areas for the preservation and sustainable development of the Amazon
The Amazon has the largest record of ancestral cultures in Brazil and is the largest Brazilian biome

Nov 7, Brasilia: A green and vast world of waters and forests. It is the Amazon, also called the Amazon Forest, Amazon Jungle, Rainforest. Anyway, there are several names that receive our humid forest that covers most of the Amazon Basin of South America.

The Amazon has the largest record of ancestral cultures in Brazil and is the largest Brazilian biome, in a territory, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, of 4,196,943 million km².

According to the Ministry of the Environment, 2,500 species of trees and 30,000 species of plants grow in this biome. And, to preserve all this natural wealth and take care of those who live there, the Federal Government has been developing a series of actions with the objective of promoting the sustainable development of the region. One of them was the creation, in January of this year, by President Jair Bolsonaro, of the National Council of the Amazon, to coordinate the projects, developed in each ministry, aimed at protecting and defending the region. The presidency of the Council is under the responsibility of Vice President Hamilton Mourão.

Green Operation Brazil

Operation Verde Brasil 2, in the Legal Amazon, started in May this year with preventive and repressive actions against environmental crimes and combating outbreaks of fire in the region. The Operation is already in its second phase. The first was held last year.

The actions take place in frontier strips, indigenous lands, federal environmental conservation units and other federal areas of the Legal Amazon. It is coordinated by the Vice-Presidency of the Republic and has the support of institutions for environmental control and public safety. They are Federal Police and Federal Highway; Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA); Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMbio); National Public Security Force; Brazilian Intelligence Agency (ABIN); and the Amazon Protection System Management and Operational Center (Censipam).

Forest + Program

The Floresta + program is designed to value those who preserve and care for the Brazilian native forest. At first, the program will allocate more than R $ 500 million, from the Green Climate Fund, to remunerate those who preserve, conserve and recover nature in the Legal Amazon. The initiative has the participation of the private sector and resources from international agreements. According to the Ministry of the Environment, the program was created to pay for good practices and to recognize the merit of those who take good care of the environment.

Various land-tenure categories may be recognized and benefit, be they private areas, of permanent preservation and restricted use, settlements, indigenous lands or conservation units, provided that they have activities for the protection and conservation of natural resources.

Gas reduction: Forest + Carbon

Floresta + Carbono was designed so that companies that cannot reduce part of their carbon emissions can compensate for them. The program provides for the generation of carbon credits through the conservation and recovery of native vegetation. It is another measure to strengthen the payment for environmental services. According to the Ministry of the Environment, tropical forests, most of which are conserved in Brazilian territory, are responsible for 55% of the world's carbon stocks, which places Brazil in a privileged position in the market for environmental services and carbon credits.

Executive Commission for Controlling Illegal Deforestation

To curb illegal deforestation in Brazil, the Federal Government created last year, the Executive Commission for the Control of Illegal Deforestation and Recovery of Native Vegetation, within the Ministry of the Environment.

The commission aims to propose plans and guidelines for the prevention and control of illegal deforestation and the recovery of native vegetation in biomes; coordinate the implementation of the National Native Vegetation Recovery Policy and the National Native Vegetation Recovery Plan, and to propose measures to strengthen the performance of the Public Power in strategic actions for the environment.

Sinaflor +

To protect the Amazon rainforest, one of the actions of the Federal Government was the launch, this year, of Sinaflor +. It is a system that allows greater control in the management of wood in the region, tracking from the origin and strengthening the fight against illegal deforestation.

Sinaflor + also brings more security to those who work regularly in the wood sector. According to the Ministry of the Environment, in addition to preventing fraud, it comes in addition to a series of actions by the Federal Government to close the siege on illegal deforestation in the Amazon. The system also has an integrated control panel for the user, with tools that go from history to intelligent search, facilitating the management of authorizations and pending issues by the entrepreneur.

Monitoring: Adapta Brasil Platform

To help gather indicators and impacts on climate change in Brazil, the Federal Government recently launched the Adapta Brasil platform. The new tool will help the public sector to adopt protective measures and develop public adaptation policies. The system was created by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovations in partnership with the National Institute for Space Research (INPE).

And speaking of monitoring, deforestation in the Amazon, according to the National Institute for Space Research, fell for the third straight month in September. A 33% drop. In July, the reduction was 26% and in August, 21%.

INPE is responsible for the Amazon deforestation data, through the DETER and PRODES systems.

Sustainable forest management

In the Amazon, the Federal Government also prioritizes sustainable forest management, a model that allows rational exploration with techniques with the minimal environmental impact on the elements of nature. About 88% of rural producers living in this region are small farmers. Through sustainable forest management, it is possible, for example, to promote, for example, local income generation and job opportunities for the traditional population.

Land regularization

With regularization, the government seeks to promote development combined with preservation. When completed, it will guarantee landowners access to credit policies and support for production, increasing producers' incomes. Regularization also imposes duties on environmental preservation on properties and accountability for illegalities.

According to the Ministry of the Environment, the land tenure regularization program will reach more than 700 thousand families of settlers and about 200 thousand families living in precarious possessions in the region.

More brigadistas

To prevent and combat fire outbreaks in Brazil, the Federal Government has been hiring new brigade members since last year. In April 2019, 98 notices were issued to hire these professionals. In all, according to the Ministry of the Environment, 1,169 brigade members will be hired for periods ranging from 6 months to two years. The vacancies are for 88 conservation units (UCs) distributed by several states of the federation.

The Federal Government increased the admission of brigadiers to contain fires by almost 50%. In 2020, 507 more brigadistas were hired compared to last year.
