Nov 2, PINK OCTOBER: Breast cancer is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the world, causing a strong financial impact on health systems and affecting 1.3 million women each year. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it is estimated that one in eight women can develop this neoplasm during their lifetime. Caused by the disordered multiplication of breast cells, generating abnormal cells that cause the tumor, breast cancer is the most common type among women and can affect men, although it is rare and represents only 1% of cases.

In the hospitals of the Ebserh Network, linked to the Ministry of Education, actions are developed to disseminate information about the disease throughout the year and intensified in October.

The Hospital Complex of the Federal University of Pará (UFPA), in addition to serving the population, also decided to include the employees who dedicated themselves to the care of patients during the context of covid-19 and who have not yet been able to perform their preventive mammography exam. Until the 30th, regulated patients of the Unified Health System (SUS), internal demand of patients and collaborators of the hospitals Bettina Ferro de Souza (HUBFS) and João de Barros Barreto (HUJBB) can undergo mammography exam and still receive multi-professional guidance, besides the guarantee of treatment, if necessary. 400 calls are expected by that date.

During that month, the Hospital das Clínicas of Recife (HC-UFPE / Ebserh) performed breast reconstruction surgeries and educational activities. Five women were operated on who are treated by HC and were waiting for the procedure. The educational actions included the distribution of informative material, the exhibition of videos, the distribution of pink ties, as well as a campaign to collect tissues and hygiene and beauty products to be donated to patients.

The Diagnostic Imaging Unit of the Professor Polydoro Ernani University Hospital in São Thiago (HU-UFSC) held four joint efforts with the objective of zeroing the demand for a specific breast exam: core ultrasound-guided biopsy. The procedure serves to collect samples of breast tissue, which are sent to detect diseases, such as breast cancer. A series of positive messages for the campaign was also drawn up.

The Januário Cicco Maternity School (Mejc-UFRN / Ebserh) lit up its pink facade and made consultations with mastologists and mammography and breast ultrasound exams available to employees, as well as informative video content with testimonials from patients who overcame breast cancer.

About the Ebserh Network

Linked to the Ministry of Education (MEC), the Brazilian Hospital Services Company (Ebserh) was created in 2011 and currently manages 40 federal university hospitals, supporting and boosting its activities through excellent management.

As hospitals linked to federal universities, these units have specific characteristics: they serve patients from the Unified Health System (SUS), and, mainly, support the training of health professionals and the development of research.
