Sep 21, Education and Research: Those who have graduated abroad in Medicine and intend to work in Brazil must pass a test to prove their knowledge and skills in the area. It is called Revalida, National Examination for the Revalidation of Medical Diplomas Issued by a Foreign Higher Education Institution. Registration for this year's edition runs until October 2 and the race will take place on December 6.

Those interested can access the website of the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (Inep ), responsible for the application, and apply. The participation fee is R $ 330. The written test will be held on December 6, in 13 cities: Brasília (DF), Belém (PA), Belo Horizonte (MG), Campo Grande (MS) Curitiba (PR), Fortaleza (CE), Manaus (AM) and Porto Alegre (RS), Recife (PE), Rio Branco (AC), Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Salvador (BA) and São Paulo (SP).

Gerson Cezar Bassani, 38, graduated in Medicine in Paraguay and is going to do Revalida with the expectation of reinforcing the service to the Brazilian population. Specialist in family health, he worked in Brazil through the Mais Médicos program, in the city of Marília (SP).

"We are around 15,000 doctors trained abroad ready to [be] tested and prove our ability so that we can be taking the front line in this [Covid-19] epidemic," said Gerson Bassani.

Through Revalida, candidates will be evaluated with items from the five major areas of Medicine: gynaecology and obstetrics, clinical medicine, general surgery, paediatrics and family and community medicine, addressed in an interdisciplinary way.

Who can do Revalida

Both Brazilian and foreign professionals can participate in the exam. For this, it is necessary to be in a legal situation of residence in Brazil and have a medical diploma issued by a foreign higher education institution recognized in the country of origin by the local Ministry of Education or equivalent body.

The diploma must also be authenticated by the Brazilian consular authority or by the process of the Convention on the Elimination of the Requirement to Legalize Foreign Public Documents, promulgated by Decree No. 8,660, of January 29, 2016.

The exam supports the recognition, by partner universities, of the diplomas of doctors who graduated abroad and want to work in Brazil.

Exam steps

Revalida is applied in two stages. The first is a written assessment with the application of two tests, an objective with 100 multiple-choice questions, and another composed of five discursive questions. The second stage is a practical test made by the participants approved in the previous stage.

From this edition of the exam, those who fail the second stage can re-enrol directly in it, in the next two consecutive editions of the exam. Until now, the candidate needed to do all the steps of Revalida again. Deadlines and guidelines for the second phase will be published, later, in a public notice.

The revalidation of the diploma is the responsibility of public universities that adhere to the unified assessment instrument represented by Revalida.

Revalida Matrix

The Reference Matrix of Revalida was published, in an ordinance, on the last 18th, by the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (Inep).

The document determines that the exam has as a reference the attendance in the context of primary, outpatient, hospital, urgency, emergency and community care, based on the National Curricular Guideline of the Medical Course, the associated regulations and professional legislation.

The objective is to assess the skills, competences and knowledge necessary for professional practice appropriate to the principles and needs of the Unified Health System (SUS).
