Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced new sanctions against 2 individuals and 4 entities, under the Special Economic Measures (Russia) Regulations and the Special Economic Measures (Ukraine) Regulations, in response to Russia’s illegal occupation and annexation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea.
March 30, Ottawa, Ontario: Since its illegal occupation and annexation of Crimea in 2014, the Government of Russia has continuously violated the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of Ukraine.
Russia has subjected those living in Crimea to significant human rights violations and abuses. It has also built up its military on the peninsula and settled hundreds of thousands of Russian citizens in Crimea, and it continues to destroy the historical heritage of the Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar peoples. Canada deplores in the strongest possible terms the serious violations of international humanitarian and human rights law that continue persistently in Crimea under the Russian occupation.
The announcement supports Canada’s unwavering commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and its people, who continue to forcefully advocate for their rights against Russia’s aggressive actions. Canada continues to call on Russia to cease its illegal occupation and to release all political prisoners who have been unlawfully detained.
The new measures align with actions taken by the European Union and the United Kingdom and are being announced in coordination with Australia and add to previously imposed sanctions.
