Brazilian Air Force has already transported 170 organs for transplant this year

Oct 25, FAB: At any time of the day or night, a Brazilian Air Force (FAB) aircraft can be activated to transport a life-saving organ. This Friday (23), when Brazilian Air Force Day is celebrated, the corporation also celebrates the mark of 170 organs transported this year.

Organ transport is one of the FAB's missions, in addition to the functions of maintaining the sovereignty of airspace, integrating the national territory and participating in humanitarian missions, among others.

The activation of an aircraft occurs according to the demand passed on by the Ministry of Health, which coordinates the National Transplant System. From then on, a chain of events is activated. It is necessary to check the landing conditions at the destination airport, activate the crew and inform the air traffic control that it is an organ transport, which gives the plane priority for landing and take-off procedures.

A 2016 decree determined that the corporation keep an aircraft permanently available for the job of taking the organs or tissues to where the recipient is. In many cases, transportation is essential for the transplantation process to take place.

It was the FAB that carried the heart that the girl Alicia Alves Silva, 11, received. Diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy, Alicia's heart grew and was no longer able to pump blood well. Today, recovered and leading a normal life in Araguaía (TO), she expresses gratitude to the FAB. "We can only be grateful for the work and dedication of the Brazilian Air Force," said Alicia.

In this year of 2020 alone, from January to September, the FAB has already transported 170 organs. In 2019, 167 organs were transported. In the past four years of work, the FAB has helped save 933 lives.

"The wings that control, defend and integrate the national territory, are the same wings that give hope to Brazilians who need help most," said aviator lieutenant colonel, Christiano Pereira.

Logistics

According to the FAB, there are full-time crews in the Transport Squadrons, full-time, throughout Brazil. As soon as the National Transplantation System receives the initial information for obtaining a specific organ, the FAB is activated and allocates the closest means to fulfil the transport mission.

Decree

Decree 8.783 / 16 provides that, to meet the requirements of the Ministry of Health, the FAB will keep at least one aircraft permanently available, which will serve exclusively for this purpose.
