Geneva Consensus Declaration also encourages family strengthening

Oct 25, GENEVA CONSENSUS: Thirty-one countries, including Brazil, signed, in a virtual ceremony, the so-called Geneva Consensus Declaration, a document in which nations defend the importance of ensuring women's access to the latest advances in terms of health promotion and strengthening the role of the family as a fundamental unit of society.

In the letter, signed on Thursday (22), countries are also committed to protecting the right to life. The initiative was led by six countries: Brazil, the United States, Egypt, Hungary, Indonesia and Uganda.

At the virtual document signing ceremony, Brazil was represented by the ministers of Foreign Affairs, Ernesto Araújo, and Women, Family and Human Rights, Damares Alves. They reaffirmed the Brazilian government's commitment to the purposes of the declaration and defended the family and life.

“We gather here in defence of women's health, strengthening the family and protecting life. Brazil is committed to working together with the other signatory countries in this declaration, within the scope of the United Nations, and other international forums for the promotion of these highest aspirations that we share ", said the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

“We also reaffirm our duty to protect human life from its conception. We categorically reject abortion as a method of family planning, as well as any and all initiatives in favour of an international right to abortion or that insinuate that right even if veiled, ”added Ernesto Araújo.

According to Minister Damares Alves, investing in the family is an indispensable measure for sustainable development and the eradication of poverty in a nation. “Strengthening bonds is a solid way to contribute to the physical and mental health of family members.

In this sense, Brazil reiterates its commitment to the integral protection and promotion of the health of all women and girls, including sexual and reproductive health ”, said Damares.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the agreement has no treaty force, nor is it binding, that is, countries are not obliged to follow the guidelines. The declaration remains open for additional signatures.

In a note, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that "the Brazilian government is proud to be part of the Geneva Consensus Declaration".
