Brazil: Sanitation and landfill projects to receive R $ 230 million

Proposals will be selected by BNDES and will integrate the Urban Environmental Agenda of the Ministry of Environment

Sep 10, Environment and Climate: The Ministry of the Environment authorized the transfer of R $ 232 million for works and basic sanitation actions of the Lixão Zero program. The funds, made available on Wednesday (9), come from the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) and come from the National Climate Change Fund (FNMC).

In addition to the R $ 350 million released in August, the new transfer represents a historical record in the volume offered by the bank in the lines of the Climate Fund, adding up to the largest transfer ever made by the Ministry in the same year.

With the funds released, the BNDES totals R $ 570 million transferred in 2020 for repayable financing of public and private projects aimed at mitigating climate change and adapting to its adverse effects.

"Under the Lixão Zero program, this transfer is an important action by the Federal Government to mitigate climate change, since the dumps are great emitters of greenhouse gases, in addition to contaminating the soil, water and causing problems for the health of Brazilians, "explained Environment Minister Ricardo Salles.

New ventures referring to the transfer can be registered with the BNDES and must undergo a qualification phase of the applicant and also the approval of the project. "As of October, we will make an active disclosure so that those interested in investing in improving the treatment of solid waste in Brazilian cities can register with the bank and be entitled to this resource", said the president of the BNDES, Gustavo Montezano.
