Sep 18, Brazil recorded an annual drop of 7% in deaths from traffic accidents in the period between 2015 and 2019. Data are from the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (DataSUS), which showed a reduction from 43 thousand to 30 thousand deaths from the year. These are some of the data that will be released during the National Traffic Week (SNT) 2020, promoted by the National Traffic Department (Denatran). The national mobilization, which takes place this Friday (18) until September 25, aims to raise awareness among the population about the importance of more responsible attitudes that provide safer traffic for all.

The drop in the number of traffic deaths in Brazil is a reflection of a series of actions implemented by the Federal Government and by state and municipal governments, such as educational campaigns, which include the Yellow Yellow and the National Traffic Week; the intensification of inspection, such as the Prohibition Blitz; improving vehicle safety; and traffic engineering measures, such as the modernization of highways. In addition, the National Congress has promoted changes to the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB) aiming at education and greater rigour in traffic legislation. The combination of these factors has contributed to the safety of pedestrians, motorcyclists and other drivers, reducing the occurrence of accidents and, consequently, the number of deaths and injuries in traffic.

“We have registered a significant reduction in the number of traffic deaths in recent years, but it is unacceptable that thirty thousand lives a year are lost as a result of accidents. Our goal is for these numbers to decrease further. We are working hard to promote education in traffic, because we believe that, in this way, we will be able to make society aware of the risks and the importance of responsible conduct ”, says the director-general of Denatran, Frederico Carneiro.

Decade for road safety

On 11 May 2011, the Decade of Action for Road Safety (2011-2020) was created by the United Nations (UN). Based on studies carried out by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2009, which estimated about 1.2 million traffic accident deaths in 178 countries, the UN established and recommended to members the creation of a plan to stabilize and reduce the number of deaths. With the end of the decade, Brazil managed to reach the goal of reducing accidents by 30% in nine years, according to DataSUS data, which went from 43,256 thousand to 30,371 thousand deaths in this period.
