Sep 16, General Eduardo Pazuello officially took charge of the Ministry of Health on Wednesday (16), in a ceremony at the Planalto Palace. The minister had been in office on an interim basis since May 16. Since then, he has been coordinating federal actions to prevent and confront Covid-19 in the country.

In the inauguration speech, Pazuello recalled that he came to the ministry at a critical moment in the advance of the disease. “Literally, we had to change the wheel with the car moving. The responsibility was enormous and we had complete freedom to implement the measures that were necessary ”, he said.

“Together, we restructured the ministry, adapted protocols and combated not only Covid-19 but also the other diseases that afflict our people. For this, we use the best tool we could have, our Unified Health System, SUS ”, said Pazuello.

The minister stressed the importance of the capillarity of the SUS and the integration with state and municipal health departments to serve the population. "The fear that the SUS would collapse can no longer exist, it did not happen and it will not happen", he emphasized.

Early treatment of Covid-19

Pazuello talked about learning about the need for early treatment of Covid-19, contrary to what was widespread about staying at home and seeking medical care only in case of shortness of breath.

“Learning [during this time of coping with the disease] showed us that the sooner we see patients, the better their chances of recovery. Early treatment saves lives ”. And he added: “With the strengthening of this conduct, we have already reached more than 3 million and 600 thousand recovered people. One of the largest numbers of recovered people in the world ”.

The minister pointed out that Brazil has reached a well-defined situation of stability in relation to the number of cases of the coronavirus. "These are clear and positive signs that all of our work and commitment is having the expected effects," he noted. He also showed solidarity with the families of the victims of the disease and congratulated the work of health professionals who are exposed daily on the front line of the confrontation with Covid-19.

He also talked about the future projects of the portfolio, such as the implementation of electronic medical records and the digital health program to increase access to health in remote areas.

Management

In the past four months, Pazuello has reinforced health structures and assistance across the country to tackle the new coronavirus in support of states, municipalities and the Federal District. To date, the ministry has allocated R $ 25.7 billion exclusively to combat Covid-19.

During Eduardo Pazuello's interim management, strategies were established for the purchase of drugs for orotracheal intubation of patients with Covid-19 to avoid the lack of products for SUS services in the states and initiatives were taken to equalize stocks.

So far, 13,382 ICU beds requested by states and municipalities have also been enabled for the exclusive treatment of patients at Covid-19, representing 100% of the requests answered. Brazil also counted on the reinforcement of 10,857 lung ventilators, delivered throughout the country.

SUS strategies were strengthened in communities and slums, with the accreditation of 91 Community Centers to be able to serve patients at Covid-19. Indigenous peoples deserved specific actions with the distribution of supplies, supplies, rapid tests and personal protective equipment to the 34 Special Indigenous Health Districts.

The Minister

Carioca, Eduardo Pazuello is a three-star general. He graduated in 1984 at the Military Academy of Agulhas Negras (Aman), in Resende (RJ), as an Intendency Officer, an area responsible for administrative and logistical tasks.

Throughout his career, he coordinated Army troops during the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, and was at the head of the Integrated Multinternational Logistics Base on the triple frontier. In 2018, he coordinated the Humanitarian Logistics Task Force (Operation Welcomed), responsible for housing refugees from Venezuela.
