Brazil: Electronic games have a reduced IPI rate

It is the second tax reduction for the sector. With the measure, the rate will vary from 6% to 30%

Nov 2, Brasilia: At a time when children and young people are more at home due to Covid-19, news that can increase leisure options. Industrialized Products Tax (IPI) rates on consoles and video game machines have been reduced. It is the second time that the Federal Government has reduced the tax on video games.


The Decree 10532, which provides for the reduction, was published in this Tuesday (27), the Official Gazette. The measure decreases the rates of IPI of 40% to 30% of consoles and video game machines and 32% to 22% on parts and accessories for these consoles and machines. It also reduces from 16% to 6% the rate on video game machines with built-in screens, portable or not, and their parts.



A businessman in the games industry, Glauber Correia, evaluated that the measure will lower prices and increase product consumption, moving the market at a time when the Brazilian economy is suffering the impacts of the new coronavirus.


“The games and video games market has grown exponentially in Brazil. So, the reduction will help consumption, companies will bring equipment, Brazilians will be able to purchase equipment, products at a better price and, mainly, reduce piracy ”, said Rocha.


With the expectation of lower prices, it is easier for little Cecília Pariz, 8 years old, to convince her parents to exchange the video game for a more modern one. “I have been there for more than five years, I think he is very old. So what are we going to do? Change to a [video game] much faster, "said the girl.



In the past, a decree had already cut tax rates from 20% to 50% for rates between 16% and 40%, according to the product.


Impact on revenue

The Federal Revenue forecast is for an impact of R $ 5.4 million in this year's collection. The waiver for the year 2021 should be R $ 36.28 million and for the year 2022, R $ 39.07 million.
