The National Institute of Cardiology (INC), linked to the Ministry of Health, promoted the first heart and kidney transplant, during the same surgery, in a public hospital in Rio de Janeiro.
The procedure took place on June 22 and was classified as “very successful” by the institution.
The patient is Luiza Rodrigues Guimarães, 23 years old. According to the INC, where the young woman is still hospitalized, Luiza "does well and completes the postoperative period." The girl, who lives in Macaé (RJ), was diagnosed with cancer while still in her teens. He was cured of the disease, but chemotherapy treatment caused sequelae in the heart.
This type of case, in which the cancer patient develops heart disease due to the treatment, is common. Therefore, this year, the INC launched a postgraduate course in Cardio-Oncology. The course is run in partnership with the Brazilian Society of Cardiology (SBC) and the National Cancer Institute (Inca).
According to physician Jacqueline Sampaio dos Santos Miranda, coordinator of the INC's Cardiac Transplant Service, double transplantation is a highly complex and rare procedure, even in the private network. “It's always a challenge, especially in the current context,” explained Miranda. “The most important thing is that Luiza received both bodies well and has a favourable prognosis. She is young and will be able to have a normal life.”
The procedure was made possible through a partnership with the Silvestre Adventist Hospital, which has expertise in kidney transplants and sent a medical team to the INC. According to Jacqueline, it was necessary to obtain special authorization from the National Transplant System (SNT) to implement the partnership between the INC and Silvestre.
In the surgery of young Luiza, the physician Carlos Eduardo Dantas, from the INC, performed the heart transplant and Dr. Eduardo Fernandes was in charge of the kidney transplant. The transplants only occurred thanks to the availability of a donor in which the family authorized the removal of both the heart and the two kidneys. As usual, patient Luiza Guimarães received only one of the kidneys and the other organ was destined for a patient at another hospital.
