Oct 25, To support top athletes, with chances of disputing Olympic and Paralympic medals and finals, the list of recipients of Bolsa Pódio, the main category of the Bolsa Atleta program, of the Ministry of Citizenship was released. There are 274 athletes, 107 Olympic and 167 Paralympic.

Athletes will receive scholarships ranging from R $ 5,000 to R $ 15,000 so that they can dedicate more time to training and invest in preparation. The complete list with the benefited athletes is published in the Official Gazette of the last 14th day.

“The benefited athletes are contemplated during an entire Olympic cycle. Only Bolsa Pódio is awarded to those who are among the twenty best athletes in the world. And they are divided into categories ranging from five thousand reais to 15 thousand reais, reaching up to 15 thousand reais for athletes that are among the top three ranked in the world ”, explained the National Secretary for High-Performance Sports of the Ministry of Citizenship, Bruno Souza.

With the use of Bolsa Pódio, athletes can pay for a private coach, a physiotherapist and have a more adequate diet, as Edênia Garcia, from Paralympic swimming, who receives R $ 15 thousand and was once again contemplated.

“With the Bolsa Pódio category, we can have greater peace of mind to train better for the Paralympics, for international competitions.”, He said.

According to Edênia, the renewal of the benefit was important, especially at this time when the world is facing the effects of Covid-19. "To have left this list of winners is very important at this moment that we live in the whole world, in this chaos that we are living in", evaluated the athlete.

Support for athletes of all ages

The list of fellows has athletes from 15 to 62 years old. The youngest in the relationship is the skater Isadora Pacheco, 15, holder of the Brazilian team at Skate Park. At the other end, aged 62, is Sônia Gouveia, from Paralympic athletics, who is third in the world ranking for the F53 class javelin launch for wheelchair users.

According to data from the Ministry of Citizenship, the average age of the athletes contemplated is 29.3 years. And there are more men (60.6%) than women (39.4%).

Most are paralympic scholarships for athletics. Right after that comes Paralympic swimming.

Of the 274 sportsmen on the Bolsa Pódio list, 29.9% will receive R $ 15,000. Another 39.8%, R $ 11 thousand and 26.3%, R $ 8 thousand. Four per cent will receive a monthly benefit of R $ 5,000.

Evolution of athletes

According to the Ministry of Citizenship, it is possible to perceive the technical evolution of Brazilian athletes benefited with Bolsa Pódio in the Olympic and Paralympic modalities in the comparison between the Rio 2016 Games (2013 to 2016) and Tokyo 2020 (2017 to 2020).

To give you an idea, in the range of those who receive R $ 15 thousand, between 2013 and 2016, 256 athletes ranked between a first and third place in the world ranking. Between 2017 and 2020, that number was 335.

In the group that receives R $ 11 thousand per month, from 2013 to 2016, 196 athletes ranked between the fourth and eighth place in the world ranking. From 2017 to 2020, that number rose to 449.

“This benefit is an acknowledgement by the Federal Government to these athletes, especially from the great elite of national sport who achieved incredible results. And we want to continue supporting the next cycles, ”added the National Secretary for High-Performance Sports at the Ministry of Citizenship, Bruno Souza.
