Another 1,500 Venezuelans are interned through Operation Welcomed
Since the beginning of 2020, more than 12,600 refugees from Venezuela have been interned
Nov 13, Brasilia: Operation Welcomed, created to receive, shelter and protect Venezuelan refugees from the crisis caused by the Venezuelan regime, continues the work of internalizing migrants. In October alone, more than 1,500 Venezuelans left Boa Vista (RR) shelters inland.
Since the start of the operation, around 43,000 Venezuelans have been interned, more than 39,000 in the current administration of the Federal Government alone.
Jonathan Perez is one of the migrants who sought a new life in Brazil. Two years ago he arrived in the country and was in the shelters of Boa Vista (RR). The new destination is Curitiba (PR). “I am very happy to go to a new city. My wife stayed in Roraima. I'm going to start working in a refrigerator and soon she'll be able to find me, ”says Perez, during the first plane flight. He was one of 125 interns who followed on a flight to the capital of Paraná in October.
The Federal Subcommittee on Interiorization, coordinated by the Ministry of Citizenship, is responsible for approving the transfer of immigrants from border cities to other states. This is the main strategy of the Brazilian Government to promote the socioeconomic inclusion of those who arrive.
“Operation Welcoming is recognized worldwide for the way it receives and offers paths and opportunities to our Venezuelan neighbours. We know that they face many difficulties in the face of the regime in their country. Here they find support for a new life ”, says Minister of Citizenship, Onyx Lorenzoni.
More than 620 national municipalities participate in the interiorization process and receive Venezuelans. Among the cities that received the most refugees are Manaus (4,863), São Paulo (2,926) and Curitiba (2,791). Among the states, São Paulo (7,358), Paraná (6,829) and the Rio Grande do Sul (5,838) stand out.
