The aircraft will be used to monitor Brazilian airspace and to defend borders. With the fighter on the stage of the event, President Jair Bolsonaro, Vice President Hamilton Mourão, ministers and the military got to know the project that resulted in one of the largest technology transfer agreements in the country's history, allowing the Defense Industrial Base access to knowledge strategic and long-term.

“The Gripen project was chosen from among the three finalists because it represents, in a concrete and real way, the best operating cost per aircraft, unrestricted access to its weapon systems, knowledge and mastery of all the technology on board and the advantage of partnership in the development and production of a modern supersonic fighter in our country, ”said Air Force Lieutenant Commander Antonio Carlos Bermudez during the ceremony.

F-39 Gripen

The F-39 Gripen arrived in Brazil in September 2020. Last Friday (23), it flew over Brasilia during the celebrations of the Brazilian Air Force Day.

This is the first of 36 aircraft ordered from Saab, a Swedish defense and security company, for the renewal of the Brazilian combat fleet. It is equipped with instruments for the continuation of the testing campaign, which began in August 2019 in Sweden. The forecast is that the first operational aircraft will be delivered to the Brazilian Air Force at the end of 2021.

"At the end of next year, we will start receiving four essential aircraft to continue composing our air defense," said the president of the coordinating committee for the aircraft program. of combat, Brigadier Major Malta.

The F-39 Gripen, which will be the backbone of the FAB's fighter aviation, reaches twice the speed of sound and can perform air defense, attack and reconnaissance missions on the same flight, without having to return to base.

The platforms are developed and produced with the participation of Brazilian technicians and engineers. This integration is part of the technological transfer to provide the necessary knowledge for the continuity of activities in Brazil.

“This technology overflows the military area. It has a dual character, civil and military. And, like all strategic projects of the armed forces, it will boost the development of other sectors of the Brazilian economy, ”said Air Force Commander, Antonio Carlos Bermudez.

Initially, the production of thirteen aircraft takes place in Sweden, then eight fighters will have their process started in the European country and concluded in Brazil. The last fifteen aircraft will be produced entirely on Brazilian soil, inside Embraer's facilities, together with the companies that are participating in the development of the program.

"All of this generating, within the country itself, employment, engineering, work by highly trained technicians for the development of our project", said Major-Brigadier Malta.
