Action alerts young people about the importance of dialogue to prevent suicide
The campaign started in 2019 to encourage dialogue with the people around them

Sep 4, To draw the attention of young people to the importance of dialogue and support in preventing suicide, the National Youth Secretariat will distribute more than 100,000 yellow bracelets with the hashtag “#Deumlikenavida. The action will take place throughout this month as part of the Yellow September mobilization, which has actions motivated by World Suicide Prevention Day, on September 10.

“We unite to raise awareness among families and, especially, young people, about the danger of suicide. As for families, we want to awaken about their fundamental role in caring, welcoming, caring, understanding people who are suffering ”, said the national family secretary of the Ministry of Women, Family and Human Rights, Angela Gandra.

“We also invite young people to wake up to the meaning of their own life, to the future that they can build”, he added.

The bracelets will be distributed to non-governmental organizations, civil society entities and those interested in participating in the initiative. To request, just send an email to Juventude@mdh.gov.br.

The #Deumlikenavida campaign was launched in 2019 to stimulate the interaction of young people with the people around them and to stimulate dialogue. It also reinforces the need to be aware of the symptoms of depression and to seek help. The initiative is from the Ministry of Women, Family and Human Rights and the Ministry of Health.

Suicide in Brazil

In 2018, Brazil recorded 13,463 suicide deaths in the Mortality Information System, according to the Ministry of Health. From 2009 to 2018, suicide was responsible for 115,072 deaths in the country.

Risk factors include mental disorders such as depression, alcoholism and schizophrenia. Also sociodemographic issues, such as social isolation, psychological factors, such as recent losses and disabling clinical conditions, such as disfiguring injuries, chronic pain and malignant neoplasms.

Between 2015 and 2018, the Unified Health System (SUS) registered a 52% increase in outpatient and inpatient care related to depression. In the 15 to 29 age group, the increase was 115% in the same period.

Attendance

Assistance to people with mental disorders takes place integrally in SUS, according to the needs of each case. Among the reference services for follow-up are the 43 thousand Family Health Units, in primary care, which serve 63% of the population.

The 2,594 Psychosocial Care Centers (Caps), on the other hand, offer shelter to the person in distress and their families. In these services, the citizen is assisted and, if necessary, is referred to another specialized service of the Psychosocial Care Network (Raps). The Ministry of Health invests around R $ 500 million per year for the expansion of Raps.

In addition, there is the Life Valuation Center (CVV), which is a non-profit association and provides voluntary and free emotional support and suicide prevention services to all people who want and need to talk, in complete secrecy and anonymity. Contacts can be made by calling 188 (24 hours at no charge), at a service centre or at www.cvv.org.br, by chat and e-mail.

Yellow September

The campaign was created in Brazil in 2015 by the Centro de Valorização da Vida, the Associação Brasileira de Psiquiatria and the Conselho Federal de Medicina.

The Brazilian Society of Psychiatry warns that the initiative becomes even more important in this period of social isolation caused by Covid-19, which leads to the emergence of mental illness and aggravates existing cases. The assessment is that the lack of treatment is one of the main factors that lead to the tragic outcome of the disease.
