The objective is to encourage respect for the right time of baby's birth
Dec 30, Sao Paulo: A call for attention and health care for pregnant women and babies was launched this year by the National Health Agency (ANS) with the promotion of the campaign #BoaHora: respect the baby's birth time !.
The initiative is an alert to pregnant women and health professionals about the risks of anticipating cesarean sections, in order to prevent births from taking place during holidays or a period that is conducive to travel at the end and beginning of the year.
“Carrying out caesarean sections without clinical indication can cause serious problems for pregnant women, such as hemorrhages, difficulty in adapting to breastfeeding, puerperal infections and for babies, prematurity, jaundice and difficulties in maintaining body temperature”, explained the director of sector development of ANS, César Serra.
The data collected by ANS from the health insurance companies point out, in the last five years, an increase in cesarean sections in the week before Christmas, indicating the anticipation of delivery. In 2019, for example, the weekly average of cesarean deliveries performed in supplementary health from December 16 to 23 was 6,049, falling to 4,176 in the week of December 24 to 31, which represents a 45% drop.
Adequate Childbirth Movement
The #BoaHora campaign: respect the baby's birth time! is being disseminated on social networks by ANS, hospitals and health plans.
“The campaign is an initiative of the Adequate Childbirth Movement, developed based on a technical cooperation agreement between ANS, Hospital Albert Einstein and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, with the support of the Ministry of Health. The Movement has already avoided more than 20 thousand unnecessary cesarean sections, ”explained César Serra.
The movement was created in 2016 to encourage, with annual campaigns, the valorization of normal birth and, thus, reduce the number of caesarean sections without a clinical indication. Hospitals and healthcare operators are also encouraged to develop innovative models of care for childbirth and birth that value normal birth.
According to the ANS Panel of Indicators of Maternal and Neonatal Care, which gathers indicators from the supplementary health sector, in 2018, 55.85% of cesarean sections performed in the country occurred before labour.
This year, due to Covid-19, ANS and partners in the Adequate Childbirth Movement provided protocols guiding the care of pregnant women and babies during prenatal, delivery and postpartum while the country is facing the disease.
